OK, let's look at the engine.
First, I have not had this running yet, and have no idea how many miles are on it. The speedo that came with the bike was for a 550, so God only knows what this bike has seen. The carbs were filled with corrosion, probably from having water in them for a long time. I shot some gas into the carbs, and got the engine to fire for just a second. That is all the running that it has done since I got it. The plug wires were screwed up, and since they are molded into the coils, I had to buy new coils. I got late model coils that allow me to replace the wires. I bought a second set of carbs to get enough hard parts to be able to rebuild one set. The engine has lots of compression, and the plugs all looked good. Also, I changed the rocker cover, and it looked very clean inside, not coked up at all. So I am hoping the engine is in good shape.
There are a couple of issues. First, look below and you can clearly see that one engine mounting boss is broken off. How they managed that is beyond me!
I will have to weld that back on before I can put the motor back in. Also, if you look below, you will see that number 4 has the stud bosses broken off on the exhaust port. I could see where this had been leaking for a LONG time. I drilled the holes a little deeper, and helicoiled them.
The port on the left shows the helicoils, and the port on the right shows the tall bosses that have been broken off. I think I have enough thread so that if I use a properly sized spacer, (to take up for the now missing boss), the studs will hold.
Next, I just HAD to get rid of that horrible white frame. I filled in some of the narfs and goobers, but was not going to spend a ton of time on it. I figured I would paint the frame black with some special paint that is very hard and chip resistant. Then I would go over it with flat black to hide all the nasties. It is a self leveling paint, and I put it on heavy, and darn if it does not look fine as is. So I will leave the frame a nice shinny black.
Plenty more to do. Will post more photos and story as I get a chance.
